What to Expect: Boat Transport Service

If you are new to transporting your boat, you will need to know what to expect from the boat transport service you have chosen to ensure that everything runs smoothly.  Ask questions ahead of time; you are speaking with companies that transport boats for a living.  They should be able to give you insight into the boat hauling process.

You will need to have your boat prepared for transport before the driver arrives on the day of pickup.  Remember, your boat will be subject to strong winds during transport, so you will want your boat to be prepared.  Hopefully, you have picked a place with at least a 14' clearance so that your carrier can safely haul your boat without the interference of tree branches.  You will also need to pick out a boatyard at the boat's destination for the drop-off.

Arrive to the pick-up point early, so that you do not leave your driver waiting.  When the driver arrives for the pick-up, go over the agenda to make sure all previously discussed details are clear.  You and the driver will make an assessment of the boat's exterior, and fill out a Condition Report, which you will both sign.  This will help protect you from any claims that are made about new damages after the boat transport service is complete.  The loading process will be time consuming, so be patient.  The driver will need to take his time in order to properly distribute the weight on the boat and trailer for a secure trip.

Once everything is loaded and secured, the driver will begin his trip.  Let the driver know if you would like to be contacted periodically during his trip.

At the boat's destination point, you will need to have a responsible agent present for the drop off.  He will also need to be prepared with the correct form of payment, which is due at the drop-off.  If you can, have the drop-off take place during daylight hours so that the boat's exterior can be inspected.  When the boat is delivered, the Condition Report will once again be signed, and a copy will be given to your agent.  Let your agent know that he should also take photos of anything he may be concerned about, just as you did at the pick-up.  If there are any damages that need to be noted, do so on the bill-of-lading that your agent signs at the delivery.  The transport company should help resolve your claim as quickly as possible.  If they do not, and you need to take further action, you can file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau.

Do not be too stressed about transporting a boat.  If you know what you expect, the process to transport baots is actually very simple.  Good preparation is the best protection you have against any possible damages.  Once you have found a good company, your boat will be transported carefully and respectfully.
